How does one then, define a healthy balanced diet? It is the putting together of your daily intake of basic food components like proteins, vitamins, fats and carbohydrates. Correct, but, in addition it also requires evasion of incompatible combinations of certain foods. It is widely known that every food item has its own digestive chemistry, an individual heating or cooling energy and post-digestive effect. When two or three different food substances of different digestive chemistry, energy and post-digestive effect are combined together it is called “Incompatible Food Combination”.  

As per modern diet and nutrition science, Compatible Food Combination (CFC) refers to the combination of foods which are compatible with each other with respect to digestive chemistry. CFC is considered as a stepping stone to optimal nutrition because it allows the body to digest and utilize the nutrients in foods to their full extent. When two or more foods are consumed that require opposite conditions for digestion, the digestive process is severely compromised. For example, protein foods require a highly acidic environment for digestion while carbohydrates (starches, sugars and fruit) and fats require a more alkaline medium. When proteins and starches are combined, their stimulation to the digestive juices generates a conflict response and produces a medium that does not digest either of the foods adequately. This situation often leads to indigestion, gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort and poor absorption of nutrients. If carbohydrates are not digested they can ferment producing poisons such as carbon dioxide, acetic acid, lactic acid and alcohol. Undigested proteins have been linked to auto-immune diseases and allergies.

Apart from digestive chemistry incompatibility, various other types of food incompatibilities are also described in Ayurveda that lead to the onset of health conditions such as acidity, liver malfunction, colitis, skin ailments etc. The common incompatibilities are potency (fish and milk products together), processing or preparation (heating honey), dosing quantity (mixing honey and clarified butter in equal proportion), consumption time (consuming curd at night), and combination incompatibility (fruit-milk shakes/ fruit salads with milk).  In Ayurveda, this concept of food incompatibility is called “Virudhha Aahar”

Dosing Time as per Ayurveda

Ayurveda has listed dosing guidelines for faster and long lasting benefits of Ayurvedic medicines. One of these guidelines is ‘Bhaishajya Kala’ i.e. time of the day to take Ayurvedic medicines. Herbs act differently when ingested at different time of the day and for best results, herbs and herbal formulations should be taken at the appropriate time.

These dosing times are defined according to factors like daily variations of the doshas, organ reflexes; the state of Agni (the digestive fire), and the stages of digestion. 

Bhaishajya Kalas defined in Ayurveda are: Abhakta (To be taken on an empty stomach), Pragbhakta (To be taken before meal), Madhyabhakta (To be taken during the meal), Adhobhakta (To be taken after meals), Samabhakta (To be taken mixed with food), Antarabhakta (To be taken between lunch and dinner),

Samudga (To be taken both before and after eating),

Muhurmuhu (To be taken repeatedly), Sagrasa (To be taken with each morsel of food),

Grasantara (To be taken between bites of food) and

Nisha (To be taken at night).

Examples of influence of Bhaishajya kala on different indications:

As per Ayurveda, sexual disorders are due to violated 'Apan Vaayu'. As per dosh kaal (timing of biological forces), Apan Vaayu is more aggressive before meal. Therefore one can get better efficacy of herbs or herbal product that acts to regulate this violated Apan Vaayu dosha if taken before meal (Pragbhakta). Therefore, medicines for sexual disorders (e.g. E.D / Premature ejacuation) shows better efficacy, if taken before meal.

Ayurveda considers kidney stones as a kapha dosha disorder. As per dosh kaal (timing of biological forces) kapha dosha is more aggressive post meal. Therefore one can get better efficacy of herbs that act to regulate this violated kapha dosha if taken after meal (Adhobhakta).

Medicines for kidney stones show better efficacy, if taken after meal.

As per Ayurveda, pachak pitta (that regulates the digestion and absorption process) is downgraded in obesity. If anti-obesity herbs are given after meal, the absorption will be very poor. Therefore anti-obesity herbs need to give before meal (Pragbhakta) for better absorption. Anti-obesity medicines show better efficacy if taken before meal. Thus Bhaishajya Kala plays an immensely important role in efficacy of any Ayurvedic medicine.

It is always advisable to check the appropriate dosing time for best effect.

A concept of aphrodisiac in Ayurveda

Due to increasing incidences of safety concerns with modern synthetic aphrodisiacs, there is an unmet medical need to have a safe and effective alternative. In recent years, herbal aphrodisiacs have proven to be a safe option. However, the onset of action of herbs as compared to synthetic molecule is a cause of concern for marketers as well as consumers. This difference is due to basic difference in modern versus Ayurvedic concept of aphrodisiac and the respective mechanism of action.

In Ayurveda ‘Vajikarana means ‘that which strengthens the body and mind as a whole by providing essential nutrients’ to seven types of body tissues called dhatus. Rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood cells), Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (bone marrow and nervous tissues), and Sukra (reproductive tissues)

Thus,the aphrodisiac activity as per Ayurveda includes multiple activities that fortify the body as a whole. This entire process takes more time to demonstrate visible effects.

Modern synthetic aphrodisiacs such as sildenafil inhibit phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) to enhance nitric oxide (NO)-mediated vasodilation in the corpus cavernosum. Such fast enhancement in nitric oxide shows immediate onset of action but also causes severe side effects on long term use. Increasing dependency is the major drawback in these molecules due to short span of efficacy. On the other hand, herbal aphrodisiacs provide long lasting strength to organs of the body. It also improves metabolism and helps the body to maintain the homeostasis to cure the sexual disorder from within. Recent research on few Vajikarana herbs reveal that the herbs also possess similar properties to some extent such as nitric oxide enhancement (e.g. Tribulus terrestris, Withania somnifera, Curculigo orchioides), dopaminergic activity (e.g., Mucuna pruriens), increase in testosterone levels (e.g., Tribulus terrestris, Mucuna pruriens, Asparagus adscendens). These effects have been demonstrated in preclinical and in vitro studies. To get similar effects in a clinical set up an appropriate dose (approximately 2-4 gm per day) needs to be given. This may be the reason for slow onset of immediate action as an aphrodisiac for poly-herbal formulations. However the ability of these herbs to reinforce the whole body and thereby improving sexual ability in long term without undesirable side effects makes the herbal aphrodisiacs a safe alternative for modern aphrodisiac.
